Most Framer work sold as custom is a template with your logo on it. That is not automatically bad — a good template well adapted beats a bad custom build — but you should know which one you are buying, because the price is often identical and the second one is worth three times more.
TL;DR
Ask to see the Framer project file, not the live site. Component structure is where the difference lives.
A real expert talks about redirects and CMS architecture before they talk about animation.
Template flips break the second you need a page the template did not include.
Fixed quotes are a good sign. Hourly on a marketing site usually means the scope was never thought through.
The Framer Experts directory verifies people, but verification is a floor, not a ceiling.
What a template flip actually looks like
A template flip is a purchased Framer template with the colours, fonts, and copy swapped. It ships fast and it photographs well, which is why it sells. The problem is structural: templates are built to demo, not to operate. Sections are frequently one-off frames rather than components, so changing a card style means editing it in eleven places. The CMS collections are shaped around the template author's imaginary content, not yours. And the breakpoints are tuned for the demo copy, so your longer German product name breaks the hero.
None of this is visible on the live site. It becomes visible the first time you ask for a page the template did not anticipate, and the answer comes back as a bigger number than the original build.
The five questions that separate the two
1. Can I see the project file, not the site?
Open it and look at the layers panel. You want to see named components — a button, a card, a section — used repeatedly, with variants. What you do not want is forty top-level frames with names like Frame 12. This single check tells you more than an entire portfolio.
2. How will you handle redirects?
If you have an existing site, this is the question that matters most and the one template flippers cannot answer. The correct answer mentions crawling the current site first, building a one-to-one URL map, and testing redirects before DNS moves. A vague answer about "setting up redirects after launch" is a warning. Redirects written after launch are guesswork; written from a pre-launch crawl they are arithmetic. There is more on this in the SEO-preserving migration method.
3. How is the CMS structured, and who fills it?
Ask what collections they plan and what fields go in each. A real answer starts with your content and works toward the design. A weak answer starts with the design and treats content as filler. Also ask who enters the first thirty items — if it is you, at 11pm, the week of launch, that should be priced and scheduled rather than assumed.
4. What happens when we need a page you did not design?
Every site needs an unplanned page within three months. The answer you want is that the design system covers it — new pages get assembled from existing components by your own team. The answer that costs money is that every new page is a new quote.
5. What is the fixed price, and what is explicitly outside it?
A clear scope boundary is a sign of experience, not of inflexibility. Someone who has run twenty projects knows exactly where scope creeps and will name it up front. Vague inclusivity — "unlimited revisions" — usually means either a small hidden scope or a project that never ends.
What the Framer Experts directory does and does not tell you
Framer verifies experts in its directory, which filters out the obvious. It does not tell you whether someone builds systems or flips templates, whether they understand technical SEO, or whether they will still answer an email in month four. Treat the badge as a floor. The project file is the real credential.
Reasonable price bands, honestly
For US and EU clients in 2026, a well-built Framer marketing site with a real component system, CMS, and SEO care generally lands between $3,000 and $12,000 depending on page count and content complexity. Below roughly $1,500 you are almost certainly buying a template adaptation, and that is fine as long as it is sold as one. Above $15,000 for a marketing site, ask what specifically justifies it — sometimes the answer is genuinely good, and sometimes it is an agency's overhead. My own rates are published for the same reason: it saves both of us a call.
The uncomfortable question to ask yourself
Do you actually need custom? If your site is five pages, your brand is not distinctive yet, and your priority is being live this month, a well-chosen template adapted by someone competent is the right call and you should not pay custom prices for it. Custom earns its money when the site is a real acquisition channel that changes often, when your brand needs to look like nobody else's, or when your content has structure a template cannot hold.
What to do next
If you are evaluating people right now, ask for the project file and the redirect answer. Those two alone will sort your shortlist. If you would rather skip the evaluation, book a discovery call and I will tell you honestly whether your project needs custom work or a good template — including when the answer is the cheaper one.

Frequently asked questions
How do I tell a real expert from a template flipper?
Ask to see the Framer project file, not the live site. Named components with variants used repeatedly means a system. Forty top-level frames called Frame 12 means a template flip that will cost you on every future change.
What should a Framer expert cost?
For US and EU clients, a well-built marketing site with a real component system, CMS and SEO care runs roughly $3,000 to $12,000. Below about $1,500 you are almost certainly buying a template adaptation.
Does the Framer Experts badge guarantee quality?
It filters out the obvious, and that is all. It does not tell you whether someone builds systems, understands technical SEO, or will still answer email in month four. Treat it as a floor and judge the project file.
